Need a new power tool? Or perhaps you just renovated your garage and are looking to stalk it up with some cool tools so you can finally get to all those projects that have been stewing in your mind for the last month. Taking a walk down the tool aisle you will see scores of different tools made by many different companies and it is quite easy to get caught up in what I like to call option anxiety. Here are a few ideas on what to consider when faced with this dilemma.

Skil 18v battery pack

Price is obviously the first consideration however, I think most people will pay a bit more for a superior product, if they are convinced that they are indeed getting what they paid for. When comparing prices be sure to include all the extras into your calculations. Sanders need sandpaper. Drills need bits, saws need blades, cordless tools need batteries. For example, with a little research on the internet it is easy to determine that NiCad 18v batteries have many problems while for a little bit more cash you can get a Skil 18v battery pack, a lithium ion battery which many feel is a far superior choice. In situations like this you do get what you pay for AND save yourself a few headaches along the way.

Another aspect you may want to consult store personnel about is replacement parts. Power tools are an investment and, like a car, you don’t want to have to buy another one just because one part breaks. Customer support could be another issue worth discussing. If there is a problem or if you have a complaint, larger companies that provide comprehensive customer support will usually take care of you by either replacing the tool or issuing a discount on your next purchase.

Safety is another thing to consider. Tools have safety ratings that you can compare. You can also do online searches to find out what types of accidents, if any, have occured with the particular model you are considering. Keep in mind that many companies only adhere to the minimum safety regulations while others are more conscientious and will go above and beyond what the regulations call for.

All in all, if done properly your search will require at least two visits to the tool store. Your first trip would be to get an idea of what is available and an idea of what your cost will be. Next get online and do a little research, read reviews and check out any consumer reports you can find. Finally, go back to the store with your newly acquired knowledge and look again. Be sure to pick your potential new tool up and hold it in your hand. How does it feel? Too heavy, too light? How noisy is it? etc…

Finally, make your decision and either purchase the power tool you’ve decided on or search for a better price. You may find a better deal on the internet or at a different store and now that you know what tool and what brand you’re looking for this last task is that much easier.

Owning your own power tools makes sense. As with many investment items such as cars and homes, it is much more cost effective to own them rather than having to rent them or buy them when a need arises. Also, in most instances it is much cheaper to do some projects yourself rather than hiring someone. However, power tools aren’t cheap so the decision of whether to buy or rent really depends on the skill level of the individual as well as how much the power tool will be used. The fact remains, by owning your own power tools you can greatly reduce your expenses for many common day to day projects.

Power screwdrivers may not seem essential, but for those of us who have fought endlessly to get a screw in our out of somewhere in the home, we know all too well what a luxury they can be. With a power screwdriver it takes only seconds to remove a screw from of the wall or install anchor screws to hang up picture frames. Since they come with a tip that can be changed from Phillips to a flat head, there is no need to have any other screwdriver around.

Power drills, either with a cord or without, are very versatile. The size and the type of drill bits you need depend on the project. You can purchase them individually, but you will get a better deal if you purchase an assortment that are sold in a package. Be sure to use the right bit for the type of drill you have and for the type of material you are drilling into.

Saws are the most commonly used power tools out there. You should purchase four different types of saws, and you will be set to take on most any project. A miter saws can be inexpensive. They’re great cutting angles on the edges of wood and other materials. Great for getting the perfect fit on the corners on the first try.

Jigsaws are used for circular cuts and most types of cut outs. One of the most common uses for a jigsaw is to cut holes in paneling for power outlets. Most jigsaws are adaptable for a variety of saw blades and are easy to handle.

Circular saws are great for a variety of projects. You need to be very careful with a circular saw as many power tool injuries occur with this particular power tool. Always use a circular saw with a safety guard attached to it. These things can cut through just about anything, thick or thin and will always leave a nice smooth edge if used properly with the right type of blade.

A table saw can be quite expensive but it will be very useful and last for years. It will only take a couple of ties using it to be glad you purchased one. There are many things you can do with a table saw. It is very helpful when you are cutting long pieces of material or heavy materials because you have a table to balance the weight on. It is also great for join pieces and getting a very straight cut.

These next two items are debated as to their necessity when it comes to power tools. It really depends on your preference and the types of projects you will be doing. A sander that works with or against the grain is something I recommend if you will be doing any type of sanding. This can be on a vehicle, furniture, or a number of other projects. Having a power sander is going to save you hours or even days of sanding by hand, depending on the size of the project. Using the right grade of sandpapers in the right order is very important. Start of with a very coarse grade and finish up with a finer grade for a very smooth finish.

Routers are wonderful tools for detail work. If you’re engraving or doing finish work, this is a great tool. There are so many accessories for routers that you can be very creative with your designing.

In the long run, if you are planning to use power tools on a regular basis it really makes sense to buy your own.

Drills are a commonly used power tool and rightly so. From hanging pictures around the house to fixing your kids toys to making forms for the new cement walkway in your garden, the power drill comes in quite handy and makes many jobs much, much easier.

Drills are classified as being for light, medium, or heavy duty work. They start at 2 amps and go up to 5 amps. It is a good idea to purchase a drill that has more than one speed. This will give you more control when you are using it for various projects. One speeds do work well, but sometimes it will take you longer when you are doing a project. If the speed it too fast for the particular project then you can damage your project.

The size of the drill you use depends on the types of materials you are working with. There are drills that are fast and there are drills that have a lot of torque. There are the super drills that offer both speed and a lot of torque for the big jobs as well. It is a good idea to evaluate what you plan to do with a drill both now and in the future before you make this decision.

An angle drill is great for getting into tight spaces. Choose a model that allows you several positions for the drill to operate in. It is also a good idea to use one that is lightweight. Some of the positions you have to use it in won’t give you enough area to have both hands on it.

You can choose to use a drill with or without a cord. The cord models are traditional, but cordless drills help reduce accidental falls due to tripping over the cord and possible electrocution. One draw back is the possibility of the battery going dead.

Make sure your power pack is fully charged and try to keep an extra battery around as it can come in quite handy if you use a cordless drill often. Be sure the extra battery is fully charged for a fast, easy swap.

Never force a drill to go in. If it is having difficulty, back it out some and then proceed slowly. You can damage the drill and cause injury to yourself if you attempt to make a large hole that the drill just can’t handle. Wear safety goggles when you operate any type of drill, even if you wear glasses. Be sure to unplug the drill before you change the bit.

A power drill is a great tool and is versatile enough to be used for a variety of projects. Making sure you use the right type of drill for the material you are working with as well as the right type and size of drill bit will ensure you get the best possible results.

There are so many wonderful power tools, all designed to help you with any project you wish to under take. It can be tricky trying to decide which power tool you should use for a certain project. However, it is very important that you take the time to find out. You don’t want to damage your project and you don’t want to injury yourself by not using the right power tool.

Drills are used to create holes for various reasons. The obvious task is to attach to things together while a less obvious task is to create a starter hole for a nail or screw.

Routers are wonderful tools. They are used to create artistic edges. Router bits come in many, many different styles. Just run the tool down the edge of the piece of wood. If you are not familiar with using one practice on something before you use it on a project to get a feel for it.

Saws are one of the more common power tools. Most anything that is built with wood involves using some type of saw. Saws are also one of the most dangerous power tools out there because of the sharp blades and the shear power they have.

Sanders are very basic power tools, but they can significantly reduce the amount of time it takes you to complete a project. There are many different shapes and sizes of sanders to choose from as well as many grades or degrees of roughness of sandpaper. A sander can add that professional smoothness to any project.

A cordless screwdriver, though very simple, is a workhorse around the house as well as the home. Many screwdrivers come with a switchable tip that can be flipped over from a flat head to a Phillips head. This means you only need one tool for all of your screws. A power screwdriver is a huge time saver and takes all the pain and strain out of tasks that would normally wear out your arms very quickly.

With so many great power tools out there to choose from, finding the right one for you and for your projects is going to take some time. Research what each type of power tool has to offer you. The more versatile a power tool is, the more jobs it can take care of for you. That will save you money in the long run because you won’t have to purchase new power tools each time you take on a different project. Read reviews and make sure any power tool you purchase is exactly what you were looking for. Rushing out and making a purchase can leave you very disappointed.

Power saws are used for just about every type of project. Some are small and can be used for detailed jobs while others are mounted into tables for cutting or ripping huge pieces of material. Power saws come in a ton of different sizes, different power volumes and different shapes. Some of the newer styles come with an infrared light that you follow as you cut to ensure a straight cut.

The big daddy of power saws is the chainsaw. Usually associated with cutting down a tree and sectioning into firewood, chainsaws come in a variety of different sizes including smaller ones used for trimming branches. A chainsaws cut is often ragged which tends to splinter the wood but these saws are not necessarily detail oriented tools.

Circular saws are used for a variety of home improvement projects. A versatile tool, the circular saw can handle a lot of the more common tasks making it the logical choice if you don’t want to purchase the more specialized saws. Circular saws are powerful enough to cut through very thick wood. Make sure you choose one that has a high level of power and comes with an easily accessible on/off switch.

A mitre saw is a circular saw that is mounted to a mitre board and is used for crosscutting at exact angles, dimensions, and lengths. You clamp the piece of wood to the board at an angle then push the saw along guides to get an exact edge. For very detailed work, a scroll saw works great. These are both very common tools used in woodworking.

A saber saw or jigsaw works well to cut paneling and other thin, flexible materials. You want one that is sturdy and fits well in your hand. When using a saber saw be aware that the quality of the blades you use is very important because they will directly affect the quality of your cuts.

A table saw is used for bigger jobs or long pieces of material. The saw blade is mounted underneath a table with the top several inches sticking out of the table. The table will have adjustable guides that can be set to a particular width. This enables lobg cuts or rips to be accomplished accurately and easily.

A band saw is the best option when you need to cut something in the middle or away from the edge of a piece of material. It consists of a small table and a lid of sorts that has a handle on it. This lid has a spring that keeps it in the open position. A thin blade protrudes down from this lid. The wood is clamped down to the table. You then pull the lid part down onto the material. One of the more common uses for a band saw is to cut out holes for door knobs or wall sockets.

There are several very small power saws as well. The crosscut saw is used when it is necessary to cut across the grain. A ripping saw operates similar to a circular saw but it is smaller. A keyhole saw is used to make curved cuts or to put round holes in paneling and dry wall.

Most saws are long lasting and durable. It is very important that you store them where the blade won’t be a safety hazard. Make sure you unplug them after every use if you don’t have a cordless saw. Since the last so long, it is important that you protect the blade and keep it clean. Never operate a saw with a rusty or bent blade. It is a potential safety hazard.

When using any kind of saw you should always were safety glasses. You also need to use any guards that may come with the saw for your own protection. Make sure you fully understand how to operate the particular saw you are using. Read the manual, be safe and have a great time creating.

We all know the reasons why taking special care is so important when it comes to operating power tools. The risk of an accident is very possible. Accidents happen all the time, thousands are reported every year that are directly related to power tools. There are even some reports of death as a result. Use the right tool for the job, read the manual and never use a power tool for a task it is not intended to be used for. Pay attention the manufacturers recommendations on safety equipment, they don’t just make those things up.

Your fingers are the most susceptible to injury. Reports show that nearly half off all finger amputations in the United States each year involved a power tool. The index and the middle finger are the two generally involved in the accident. The most common power tool involved in these cases are the various types of saws. Of these finger injuries, 55% occurred while operating the power tool at home.

One of the more common mistakes that result in injury is neglecting to turn off the power while changing parts on a power tool. It doesn’t matter how much experience you have with the power tool or how quickly you can change the part. Drill bits and saw blades are the most common culprits. It only takes a moment to unplug the power source. If you are using a cordless power tool, you may want to remove the battery before you change anything on it. The inconvenience is worth your safety.

Cords on power tools are another concern. Using a cordless tool with eliminate several potential accidents such as tripping over the cord or injuries due to exposed wire. If you do use a power tool that has a cord, always secure it properly. Don’t leave the cord out in the open where you or someone else can trip on it. Inspect your tools for frayed cords before you get started. This includes an extension cords as well. Keep the cords out of wet, damp areas, because if liquid is spilled on them you are at risk of electrocution.

Even when using a tool properly, wearing the right safety equipment, accidents can still happen. You could slip or fall while you have a power tool in your hand which could easily result in an injury.

NEVER use alcohol when using a power tool. My brother is an ophthalmologist and has a story he uses all the time when advising people about safety issues. He had a patient once that was complaining about headaches occurring behind the area of his eye. X-rays showed that he had 3 16 penny nails lodged between the lobes of his brain. Evidently he had been using a nail gun to install facial boards under a gutter and accidentally shot himself. The nails went through the tear duct and into his head. He was so inebriated that he didn’t even notice until the next day.

One of the best preventative steps you can take is to be sure your work area is secure. Always secure your ladders in place before climbing up. Slippery and unstable surfaces should be dried and secured before you step on to them. I understand that not all work areas are under the best of circumstances but you must try to always be cautious and use common sense.

This information isn’t meant to scare you, only to help you remember that power tools are dangerous. I sincerely hope that all of your experiences with power tools with be safe and productive.

As we do our part, so do the manufacturers of power tools. They are very aware of the types of accidents and injuries that take place with power tools. They strive to make improvements on their power tools to help reduce the risk. Most manufacturers welcome your comments, so if you have any ideas on making them safer please contact the manufacturer of that particular power tool.

Most power tools on the market are designed for everyone to use. However, if you happen to be a lefty then you may realize just how difficult it is to operate some power tools. For example, one of the most common complaints is that the power switch is located in a spot that isn’t convenient or easy for left handed people to get to in the event of an emergency.

With saws, a left handed person has two choices – hold it with your right hand and hope your coordination is good enough to make a straight cut, or make the cut backwards with the blade and material coming at you. Not a great set of options.

Many left handed individuals feel cheated. In fact, the Left Handers Club, a group that was formed in 1990, has been sparking the interest in many power tool manufacturers to address the situation. Saws are one of the most used power tools but there are no saws for left handed individuals as of this writing. Left handers must resort to using a table saw works best because they can choose to cut on either the right side or the left side of the blade.

On the flip side, lefties haven’t been left out completely. There are routers, nailers, sanders, drills, and power screwdrivers available for left handers. Manufacturers have worked hard to redesign them with features like the centered putting the on/off switch which can be accessed from the left or the right.

Porter-Cable, a relatively unknown manufacturer of power tools, has introduced a left handed circular saw kit. This kit features a blade on the left hand side. Reviews show that it is very inexpensive, around $100, and seems to work very well for a lot of different materials. This might be a great saw for left handed individuals to try out. This seems much safer than maneuvering backwards or using the wrong hand.

Panasonic now offers a left handed cordless drill. This drill is also reported to have a quick recharge and to be a great tool all around. However, the selection is still not up to par with right handed power tools.

Tool belts on the other hand (pardon the pun) have come a long way in the realm of satisfying their left handed customers. This is very helpful and a step in the right direction, especially for left handed individuals who work in the construction industry. They commonly wear a tool belt for eight to twelve hours a day, five or six days per week.

It appears that the power tool industry has made some steps in the right direct when it comes to making the majority of power tools accommodating for both left handed and right handed individuals. Moving the power switch made a huge different on many of these power tools. Left handed individuals used to have to reach in front of the power tool with their other hab to access the switch which was an accident just waiting to happen. Now most of the major power tools have the power switch in the center.

Since there are so many left handed people in our world, and it is no longer something to be ignored, there is a huge demand for power tools for left handed people. Creating power tools that appeal to this market seems like a great opportunity for power tool manufacturers. There has been some progress in this area over the past ten years, and there are good indications that progress will continue in meeting the power tool needs of left handed individuals. Eventually, left handed people will be able to purchase power tools that are effective, safe, and work with them instead of requiring them to find a way to use a right handed set up.
